Changing Your Name

1) Get a copy of your marriage license.
Before you can change your name on any documents, you'll need a certified copy of the marriage certificate with the raised
seal and your new last name on it. You can call the clerks office in the county where your license was filed to obtain a copy
if one was not automatically sent to you.

2) Change your social security card.
Visit the Social Security Administration's website and fill out the application for a new social security card. You'll keep the
same number...just your name will be different. Mail in your application to the local Social Security Administration office.
You should get your new card in about 10 business days.

3) Change your drivers license at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Go to your local BMV office to get a new license with your new last name. Bring along your old drivers license, a certified
copy of your marriage certificate, and your new Social Security card.

4) Change your bank accounts.
This one is important, especially if you're setting up a joint bank account, or if you already have one set up. The fastest way
to change you name is to go the nearest branch location and take along your new drivers license and a certified copy of your
marriage certificate. You should request new checks, a new debit card and new credit cards on top of changing the name
attached to your accounts.

5) All the other things...
Employers/payroll
Post Office
Utility companies
Credit card companies
Schools or alumni associations
Landlord or mortgage company
Insurance companies
Doctors offices
Voter registration office
Your accountant
Your attorney
Your passport.

While some of these changes can be done by phone or online, others may
require a visit to their offices.
